We frequently do geophysics work in the right-of-way alongside road. We also frequently work within the road itself. On occasion we work within the Garden State Parkway, which is probably the most intimidating road in NJ. It doesn’t seem like there would be utilities beneath the Parkway, but that road is 70 years old and has been evolving and expanding steadily over that time. Luckily we have a variety of assistance in the form of crash trucks, traffic control, and police escorts to keep us safe. We also successfully drilled a series of over a dozen boreholes in and alongside the Parkway, but its unlikely the traffic even slowed down to notice.
